How Many Calories in a Banana

Dear Diet Forum,

I’m starting my resolution to eat healthier starting with eating more fruits. Can you tell me how many calories are in a banana. I plan on eating bananas at least once a day on my new diet.

Marge

Dear Marge,

The calories in an average size banana is 200  calories with 51 grams of carbs which is quite high.  Banana is an excellent source of vitamin C and potassium, however when it comes to losing weight, I would recommend eating banana a little more sparingly due to it’s high glycemic (sugar) content. Though bananas have natural sugar, most people have trouble losing weight and burning fat because their sugar level are already too high. The excess insulin that high sugar level produces prevents the body from burning it’s fat reserve.

You may eat ½ banana per day with your cereal in the morning. Try to eat the banana early in the day so your body can burn the excess sugar.  I would limit myself to no more than 1 banana per day. Other lower glycemic fruits that help burn fat are berries (all types), kiwi and apples.
