Getting Harder to Lose Weight with Age

Dear Editor,

I’m 42 years old and about 70 pounds over weight. When I was younger it seem so much easier to lose weight but now that I’m in my forties, losing just 1 pound seems impossible. Is it really harder for people to lose weight when they get older?

 Dear Visitor,

The basic answer to your question is that “Yes” it is harder to lose weight as you get older for many reasons. People tend to become less physically active as they get older and the body does not respond as fast to dieting as it once did.

Though it may be harder to lose weight at 42, never give up. The battle is first won in your mind that you can do this. Commit to a diet and exercise plan that you can be consistent with. In other words, don’t drastically cut your calories, but change your eating habits and commit to a good diet plan 6 days out of the week.  Allow 1 day where you can eat other foods that you enjoy but would never consider as part of your diet.

Monitor your calorie intake, increase your exercise by walking at a fast pace 3 days weeks and reducing junk foods along with pasta, pizza and bread products will get the ball rolling to steady weight loss. Don’t obsess over losing weight but concentrate on the habits that create weight loss. Give yourself time and don’t crash diet and you will lose the weight.
