Low Calorie vs. Higher Calorie Diet Plan

Dear Diet Forum,

I need to lose 50 pounds fast and my thoughts are to put myself on a 1000 or less calorie diet plan to lose the weight. I tried 1000 calorie diet plans in the past that ended in failure because I eventually get too hungry and binge. However, I don’t know any other way to lose weight fast other than to force myself on a low calorie diet menu and hope that I can stick with it until I lose 50 pounds. What do you suggest?

Dear Need Help in Nebraska,

Your first problem is trying to lose weight fast. Your thinking is wrong. Losing weight and keeping it off is a lifestyle and you need to concentrate on healthy eating habits while restricting your calories but eating 1000 calories or less may set you up for failure as you have previously experienced.

Instead of limiting yourself to 1000 calories which is very restrictive, allow yourself 1400 to 1600 calories per day of quality foods. By quality, I mean lean proteins from poultry, fish and protein drinks and complex carbs from vegetables, nuts, fruits and beans. Absolutely no added sugar or flour products.

Lunch and dinner should consist mostly of meat and vegetables supplemented between meals with fruits, protein shakes and a serving of nuts if you like.  These high quality foods will burn more fat than a lower calorie diet full of low quality carbs such as bread, rice, pasta and other flour products.

Most people completely blow their diet on side dishes such as bread or flour / sugar products. Just stick to the basic ……. meats and vegetables supplemented with fruits and protein shakes and you’ll lose those 50 pounds in due time.
