Diet Plateau and What to Do
Dear Editor,
I have lost 20 pounds over the
last 4 months but I seem to hit a plateau. If I
eat less, I’ll practically starve myself and I
don’t want to do that. I exercise about 4 days
per week either walking or on the treadmill at
the gym. What can I do to break this barrier?
Dear
Visitor,
Reach
a weight loss barrier or plateau is common to
most people on a diet. Our bodies are amazing
and adjust to most everything. From your body’s
perspective, it’s suddenly not
getting the amount
of food it use to receiving and burn through
it’s reserve. However, to compensate for the
fewer calories and for SURVIVAL, your body has
lowered the rate it burns calorie, i.e., your
metabolism has decreased and eating less food
will put you into a state of starvation which
leads to over-eating, binging and weight gain.
The best way to counteract
this barrier is to make sure you eat 5 to 6
small meals per day. You probably should
increase your calorie intake by a few hundred
calories to prevent binging. Maintain your
current exercise program and focus on 5 to 6
smalls meals per day that are evenly spaced
throughout the day. DON’T FOCUS ON THE SCALE,
but just focus on maintaining your good eating
and exercise habits and the weight will
eventually start coming off again. I recommend
that you weigh every month. The weight loss will
be slower than the initial 20 pounds but who
cares. The issue is to keep losing weight slowly
but surely until you get to your target weight.
