The Story Behind
Fat Free & Delicious

I wasn't always a healthy eater or a healthy cook. I always loved cooking, eating and entertaining - but I did it with foods that were stuffed with calories and oozing with fat. I overate, smoked and drank too much. I never exercised...sound familiar?

My family history should have warned me. Every male member of my family had quadruple bypass surgery.  I quit smoking for my 40th birthday, but when I was 42 my doctor told me, "You're a victim of heredity. You'll have to take heart medication for the rest of your life." It was in my genes and I believed I had no choice but to follow doctors orders.

By my 50th birthday, I had been taking medication twice a day for eight years. I started thinking, "There's got to be a better way!"

I decided to look into alternatives. When I moved to California I celebrated my 50th birthday by becoming a lacto-ovo vegetarian, meaning I gave up meat but still consumed dairy and eggs. I was also cooking with plenty of oil. No wonder I didn't lose weight and still had high cholesterol!

Then I found doctors like John McDougall and Dean Ornish, who promoted low-fat eating lifestyle changes for better health. I decided to try their methods for 30 days and started to lose weight and bring my cholesterol down. The change in my diet and lifestyle increased my energy and eventually I was able to go off all medication.

My first cooking attempts, though, were far from fabulous. I had been a gourmet cook for 25 years and wasn't satisfied with food that tasted bland and boring. So I started converting recipes and creating my own. Before long, I had learned how to make eating healthy savory, festive and fun.

I collected these recipes in Fat Free & Delicious, which has taught thousands in Northern California how to cook fat-free, delicious meals using a combination of nutritional awareness and a sense of humor. I know how this kind of eating puts me  in control of my own good health
