My friend told me that the only way to lose
weight is through high fiber diets. He said that a high fiber diet
will make you have more bowel movements, cleanses you intestines
and helps burn fat. So now I'm really confuse because I was
recently on a low carb diet which was high in fat and low in
fiber. Who do I believe?

Dear Confused,
You're not the only person confused about which
diets to choose. First of all, the only true way to lose weight
and keep it off is to stay on a sensible diet plan and exercise
more. But when it comes to diets, many people are confused as to
which diet they should choose.
High fiber diets are good because as your
friend stated, they promote colon and intestine cleaning by
frequent bowel movements. The other advantage of high fiber diets
are that they help fight diseases. A diet high in fiber will
consist of many fruits and vegetables.
Fruits and particularly vegetables, are low in
calorie and fat. To lose weight, you simply must burn more
calories through the day than you take in. There is no getting
around this. Herbal products and diet pills are not going to boost
your metabolism. The only way to boost your metabolism is to
exercise more. However, when you eat a lower amount of calories,
your body burns the excess fat. This is how you lose weight and
burn fat.
To most people surprise, you can lose weight on
a low fiber, higher fat diet but it will be very difficult. High
fat foods are loaded with calories, and it's easy to exceed your
calorie limitation (about 1500 calories for women) when you eat
fatty foods. Foods that are high in fiber tend to be much more
feeling and nutritious.
What's a better diet to lose weight, a high fat
diet of
2 slices - chocolate cake per day
or ... low calorie, high fiber diet
of:
stir fry vegetables mixed with chicken
soup
egg white omelets with meat
sandwiches
diet soda
1 serving of spaghetti
1/2 cup of sherbet.
The last menu is a lot more food and has the
same amount of calories as the 2 slices of chocolate cake. Because
of the high fiber bulk, the last menu is a lot more filling and
nutritious. Yes, you can lose weight eating nothing else but 2
slices of chocolate cake per day but we dare you to try this crazy
diet. Chances are good you would not make it past the first day
before gorging on other foods.
