Dear Editor, Are low calorie diets good for quick weight loss? I need to lose weight fast and a very low calorie diet plan sounds like a good idea. I just wonder if I can stick to the diet plan long enough to lose the weight. ~ ~ Brittney
Dear Brittney, You may initially lose weight on very low calorie diets, but you will soon come to a plateau and stop losing weight. What’s worse, you’ll quickly re-gain the weight because low calorie diets lower your metabolism and makes it easy to re-gain the weight. Instead of concentrating on quick weight loss, strive to lose about a pound per week. You can do this through daily exercise and a diet that’s between 1200 and 1400 calories per day. Write down all the food items that you plan to eat for the day and write the corresponding calorie value next to it. The total calories should add anywhere from 1200 and 1400 calories per day. Include at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables. Plan 4 to 5 small meals each day. In addition to a reasonable low calorie diet plan, strive to include daily exercise to your routine. Walking at a fast pace for 30 minutes a day, 4 times per week is idea exercise that will prevent your metabolism from slowing down due to low calorie diets. Your other concern about
sticking to your diet plan is very valid. Diet plans that are too low in
calories are hard to stick to. Very low calorie diets are impossible to
stick to. A more reasonable diet plan between 1200 and 1400 calories is
much easier to successfully maintain.
