Dear Editor, Do you have any recommendation for a low salt diet? I know my salt intake is too high because when I sweat, there are lots of salt crystals on my face after the sweat dries off. I’m also more than 50 pounds overweight. Do you have any suggestions? ~ ~ Georgia Dear Georgia, First start off by not adding additional salt to the foods you cook. You’ll be surprise at how many people put too much salt on their foods. If you like, use salt substitutes that give you the taste of salt without the harmful affects. Avoid eating out as much as possible because fast food and restaurants tend to use lots of salt in their foods. Even when restaurants offer lower fat menus, the foods tend to remain high in salt. The more you cook at home, the less salt you will consume if you’re careful not to add additional salt. Also avoid pre-package meals, which tend to be high in salt. The exception is Healthy Choice products, which does a good job at reducing both salt and fat. Learn to read the labels of all the foods you buy or eat. We recommend that your salt intake stay below 2500 mg of sodium per day. By reading the labels, you’ll know exactly how much salt you’re consuming. If you really need to lower your salt intake, strive to stay below 1500 mg.------------------------------------------------------------ If you need help creating a dieting plan, let us help.
